Titel und Beschreibung Englisch Organic soils in Austria: Extent, management and greenhouse gas emissions. Based on a comprehensive data analysis, 100,119 ha of organic soils according to the IPCC definition were identified in all land use categories in Austria. Of these, 41% or 41,326 ha are in a drained state. The total annual emissions of drained organic soils in Austria amount to 992 kt CO2 equivalents, with the majority (896 kt) being emitted directly as CO2. Despite the small area, this corresponds to 1.4% of current annual Austrian greenhouse gas emissions (72,844 kt CO2 equivalents in 2022). Drained organic soils have the potential to be transformed from a significant source of greenhouse gases back into a sink of greenhouse gases through rewetting and thus make an important contribution to achieving the climate targets and goals of international regulations.
