Titel und Beschreibung Englisch PFAS in fire extinguishing foams. Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) were and are used as surfactants in fire extinguishing foams. The use of fire extinguishing foams containing PFAS has led to extensive environmental contamination. Selected PFAS have been banned from use since 2011. The EU is now endeavouring to ban all PFAS in fire extinguishing foams. As part of an online survey conducted in Austria, the status of PFAS in firefighting foams was analysed. The results showed that foam fire extinguishers containing PFAS are still in stock in a large number of companies and institutions in Austria. Hardly any foam fire extinguishers were clearly labelled with PFAS. Information on the ingredients of foam fire extinguishers was only publicly available to a limited extent.
