Resource title and description in English GIS content displayed according to OGC standard WMS 1.1.1The Web Map Service allows for map-based geo data to be retrieved directly from a geo data source. Users or programmers can use various WMS parameters to select the geo data to be displayed as well as the preferred resolution and map section. The target format and map projection can also be defined. By consequence, the WMS is highly flexible and allows for a large range of creative options. A further advantage lies in the fact that the map sections displayed via WMS are always based on the most current original data source available. The result of a WMS is always shown as a raster image, even if the original data were in vector format. Please note that WMS queries put relatively high demand on web service infrastructure and the underlying geo databases because the resulting image is calculated in real time. Therefore it is only ideally suited to high-performance mass access.
